Tell us about yourself.

Pedro: Hello. My name is Pedro Martins Timoteo da Costa and I’m from Brazil. Currently, I’m a Senior Backend Engineer with EMURGO Fintech where we build Web3 products and services for the Cardano ecosystem.

What’s your professional background?

Pedro: I’ve been a software engineer and computer programmer for more than a decade. I started my professional career at the age of 17 and have been a software engineer throughout my entire professional career. In my career, I have built a diverse portfolio by working on several projects in a lot of different industries. Some of my past projects include developing tax and compliance software solutions, building stock trading solutions and UI automation, and working on online payment integration systems, among others. These experiences have enabled me to develop a broad range of programming skills.

Tell us about your journey to EMURGO and why you chose to work at EMURGO.

Pedro:  I came to EMURGO two years ago and it’s been such a fascinating experience. For a long time before joining EMURGO, I had been a crypto enthusiast. After a while, I increasingly felt that I should bring my skills to the crypto industry so I can help it grow to the best of my ability. This began my quest to find a job in blockchain and crypto. I applied to several companies and was fortunate to receive offers from all of them. However, I didn’t feel they were the right choice for me. After randomly browsing through the Cardano website, I learned about EMURGO. I visited EMURGO’s website and came across a presentation made by EMURGO founder Ken Kodama at Japan Blockchain Conference 2019. After watching it, I immediately believed in EMURGO’s vision and mission to build socially impactful solutions on Cardano and decided to apply for an open position. I was happy to receive an offer!

How is working at EMURGO different compared to your previous companies?

Pedro: At EMURGO, I get the opportunity to contribute directly to the Cardano blockchain ecosystem. Cardano can change society for the better by increasing individual sovereignty, increasing access to financial services for the underbanked, and so much more through Web3 products and services built on Cardano.

Besides that, working at EMURGO is awesome because I have a lot of freedom to make my own decisions and my managers always provide me with all the resources I need to perform at my best.

EMURGO is a founding entity of the Cardano blockchain, one of the largest blockchain ecosystems. How has working in blockchain and Web3 benefited your career?

Pedro: Working at EMURGO has taught me a lot about technical knowledge in blockchain, Cardano, and even general concepts like cryptography and overall software engineering. I’m always learning something new every day and I apply this new knowledge when developing and maintaining our Web3 products and services for Cardano.

Describe your best moment at EMURGO.

Pedro: My favorite moment was when we finally migrated the Yoroi Wallet databases to a new Cardano blockchain indexer I built. This new indexer had a massive impact on the overall sync speed for Yoroi Wallet users and was a project that I took the initiative to start and see through. Seeing it completed and go live for the million-plus Yoroi Wallet users around the world has been extremely rewarding.

What’s your favorite EMURGO employee perk?

Pedro: Remote work + flexible working hours = A great work/life balance!

What advice would you give to those who want to work at EMURGO?

Pedro: Have an open mind and take initiative to be a natural learner about blockchain tech and Cardano. Although it is not a requirement to get hired for most job positions, studying and learning as much as you can about blockchain and Cardano will help you to perform better in this space.

Tell us three fun facts about yourself!
