The Edinburgh CIP-1694 workshop to discuss Cardano on-chain governance is a wrap and closes the first cycle of Cardano community governance workshops. The first round was an enormous success as CIP-1694 discussion happened on every continent on the planet.
The amount of participation and community feedback received has been enormous. This shows the strength of the Cardano community and how committed everyone is to a successful Voltaire era to have a sustainable Cardano network in the future.
Yet, the work is not done. Just because the first round of CIP-1694 is over, it doesn’t mean that the community governance discussion and debate process is over. We just gave the first step into the launch of Voltaire and there are many steps to come to continue to discuss and form a solid foundation for community governance of the Cardano blockchain.
So, we’ll review what are the best ways for you to continue participating in the CIP-1694 conversation.
1. The official CIP-1694 GitHub
The place to start is the GitHub repository for the CIP-1694 conversation. It has been the main hub for discussion since the start of the governance debate. It contains the most up-to-date information regarding the current state of the design.
In the repository, most of the information about the current design is contained. First, it’s the place where the most current description of the three governing bodies is found: the Constitutional Committee, the Delegated Representatives, and the SPOs.
Second, it’s also where the technical discussion on how the infrastructure for governance is shaping up. Here we can find information about the different cryptographic certificates and delegation schemes each of the governing bodies would need to function.
Finally, the Catalyst Swarm has launched an aggregator website based on the official GitHub repository where the information can be found translated into most major languages. This is the link for the site.
To participate in the discussion, one must use GitHub’s comment system. The comments section of the CIP-1694 repository is where the discussion is happening. A GitHub account is needed to engage in the debate since GitHub prevents people without a profile from writing.
The discussion sometimes tends to go into more technical topics. Most programmers will use GitHub rather than other platforms, so many of the comments will be technical. It’s still very important to follow what’s happening in the GitHub repository since it’s leading the rest of the field.
2. The Cardano Foundation Forum
Another great alternative is the CIP-1694 forum. This space is maintained by the Cardano Foundation and it has become a gathering place for the Cardano community. Many topics relate to the network there, but one of the most popular is discussions around CIP-1694.
The sub-forums for the topic can be found in the ‘governance’ category. There, some discussions are in different languages and it can go beyond the CIP-1694 topic as it’s meant to be for all talks related to governance.
The tone and character of the debate is more relaxed. People tend to use the forum to discuss the broad aspects of the CIP-1694 debate, and for that reason, it can be a friendlier place for non-technical people.
The debate among the community in the forums doesn’t have a direct impact on the future of Voltaire. It’s intended as a free space to openly share ideas and it’s not as closely monitored as the GitHub repository.
3. Cardano Town Halls
The Cardano Community hosts a series of Town Halls for all regions of the world. They are organized and maintained by members of the community, not officially associated with any of the three founding entities of the Cardano network.
Even so, the Town Halls have become an important place for debate, networking, collaboration, and more. They function as meeting points close to a person’s location where they can discuss Cardano with others that share a similar cultural background.
Each of the Town Halls has a place to discuss CIP-1694. In some cases, these Town Halls use Discord to have asynchronous conversations where a dedicated channel for CIP-1694 can be found. In other cases, the Town Halls meet over Zoom on certain dates, often they will also have a special room for CIP-1694.
The Town Halls are not officially part of the Cardano network, but they are important community hubs. They represent the perfect venue for those wanting to engage with the CIP-1694 debate and share with other people close to their region.

4. IOG’s Technical Discord
The official Discord server of IOG is also a place to discuss CIP-1694. There is a dedicated Voltaire channel and also a CIP-1694 workshops thread where people can talk about their experiences organizing or participating in workshops.
The Discord attracts those deep in the Cardano technical community. So, initially, it doesn’t appear as the place for non-technical people, but reading through the comments in the Voltaire section, it’s possible to see that they are more general rather than technical.
The crowd is smaller in the Discord than at the Cardano Foundation Forums, but that can be a positive thing. The conversations tend to be smaller, so they can be easier to follow.
5. Next round of CIP-1694 workshops
Finally, just because the first round of workshops is over, that doesn’t mean they won’t happen ever again. As we said, we are at the beginning of the governance debate, much work lies ahead of all of us.
Once the Edinburgh Workshop closes and the first round of feedback and conclusions is gathered, the information will be used to launch the next round of workshops. These will happen both physically and virtually all around the world.
If you were not able to participate the first time around, pay attention to the announcement of the second round. It’ll be possible not only to attend the workshops but also to organize them. This time can be used to learn about the latest CIP-1694 debate and then lead a workshop in your local area next time.
