The Voltaire era is the last era of the Cardano blockchain roadmap which focuses on on-chain governance policies to support a community-led and sustainable blockchain.
At the heart of Voltaire is CIP-1694 (Cardano Improvement Proposal), which aims to start discussions around how to shape sustainable and decentralized governance policies, including forming governing bodies, voting policies and procedures, and other technical details. Once confirmed by the community, the goal is to have Cardano become a fully functioning decentralized blockchain network run by its community of stake pool operators (SPOs), developers, academics, organizations, and more.
To achieve this objective, EMURGO is supporting initiatives to foster greater understanding and participation in Cardano on-chain governance by the Cardano community.
Taking part in active discussions on community governance
Cardano has a large global community that is consistently onboarding more interested members. Ever since its launch in September 2017, Cardano has been carefully building its worldwide community, integrating important features such as smart contracts, upgrading technical infrastructure for devs and SPOs, and laying the groundwork for the community to eventually fully run the network.
In early 2023, EMURGO, IOG, and Cardano Foundation participated in a kick-off community workshop on Voltaire alongside some Cardano community members. Governance topics such as promoting community participation, forming governing bodies, community tooling, and other technical topics were discussed to collaborate and exchange feedback with the community.
EMURGO continues to work closely with IOG, CF, and other community stakeholders in helping to facilitate a smooth transition to full community governance on both technical and non-technical levels.
Hosting and supporting Cardano community workshops
On a non-technical level, EMURGO is organizing and hosting an in-person CIP-1694 workshop in Tokyo, Japan for the APAC Cardano community in June 2023 to help accelerate community awareness and ratification of CIP-1694.
Senior representatives from EMURGO including CEO Ken Kodama, and EMURGO Middle East & Africa Co-CEO Yosuke Yoshida will attend alongside Kevin Hammond from IOG Engineering and Evangelos Markakis from IOG Research.
EMURGO is also supporting CIP-1694 virtual and in-person workshops with financial assistance for Cardano community members wanting to organize and lead workshops in their respective local regions with in-person support for locations where this is possible.
Since Cardano is ultimately designed to be in the hands of the community, EMURGO strongly supports community initiatives to foster greater awareness and community involvement regarding Cardano governance.
